QUALIFICATION: ROAD PLANER

Road pavement is known to wear out eventually and be renovated on a regular basis. Special road milling machines are used to improve roadways. They make it possible to level old road pavement, texture its surface, restore bonding properties, lower noise, remove the old surface layerwise or full-depth, rip up pavement for underground communications, hatches, as well as planarize concrete floor in manufacturing facilities.

The interlocking grooves bind stronger to the new asphalt providing a longer-lasting, more waterproof patch that is less prone to slip or settle. The material removed from the old pavement is packed in the underlying layers of the pavement and pulverized into reusable one. When this is mixed with the base, it provides a sturdy foundation for the new asphalt course.

GAZ Group (“Bryansky arsenal” plant) offers a cold milling planer ÔÄÕÑ-Ê-1000-01 (1) for layer-by-layer removal of asphalt coat. The planer provides milling interlocking edges, at the curb, with sufficient conveyor swing (left or right) and turning radius to accomodate today's demanding urban milling conditions. The propulsion unit is based on high quality components of foreign brands: Deutz diesel engines and Bosch Rexroth hydraulic pumps. A hinged cowl makes the propulsion more available for maintenance. A rotor drum drive is made on the basis of an integrated hydraulic motor Bosch Rexroth. The miller will cut to 200 mm deep; the previous ÄÑ-197 model’s maximum cutting depth was 80 mm. the driven element has a drop right side to remove the rotor without lifting the whole driven element thereby reducing labour time at the end of the cutting track. The hydraulic system of the rear-wheel drive is equipped with quick-split clutches, it cuts down time on switch-over to street curb milling. The frame of the cutter is integrated with a fuel and water tanks that adds to its compact design and better outside appearance. Cutting teeth are supported in the tool fixture through split spring sleeves which enhances their rotation and durability properties up to 500-3,000 square meters a kit. The cutting teeth have a herring-bone pattern with a 15 mm distance between the cutters.

Dynapac offers the latest generation of cold planers including powerful, highly manoeuvrable, hydraulically powered planers designed for large cutting widths and depths, medium and compact planers. These machines are capable of removing asphalt and concrete material of the removed course and in front of obstructions such as hatches. The legendary Dynapac PL2000 planer was developed back in 1978 and became a prototype of all modern cold planers. Equipped with a quick release front loading and electronic levelling systemthe compact planers have been developed for road maintenance jobs and other milling applications in asphalt or concrete. They allow high performance and ease of operation.
Today Dynapac supplies seven models of road planers: PL350T (2), PL500T, PL500TD, PL1000RS (3), PL2000LS, PL2000S, PL2100S. All of these cold planers are offered with a three or four wheel drive unit and with an anti spin control system. A Wide V-belt power band drives the rotary cutter mandrel through a planetary reducer gearbox inside the cutter drum, which minimizes damages due to obstruction and the chance of the actuator breakage. Optionally planers can be fitted with smaller cutting drums; it only takes 2 hours to replace them. The Dynapac planers are equipped with a flexible quick-change system for drums. Special drums for demarcation work and fine spaced cutting drums are easy and quick to change. An operator has to perform 3 operations instead of traditional 16 to replace the Kennametal KPF 301 tool holders. There is no need to weld or restore the screw thread. Smaller drums with an adapted scraper blade and a side cutting wheel are also optionally available for new models. A forward inclinedbushing construction offers increased traction, reduced wear and tear. A retaining cone system makes this tool holder system easy and economical to use.
The Dynapac planers are applied in various asphalt concrete milling works. Depending on works a blade has a float, full-open and prop position. The Dynapac patented applied, hydraulically operated front sealing of the cutter housing, adapted to the shape of the cutting drum, minimizes the accumulation of the milled material.
The RX-400 is a 4 ft. (1.20m) Cold Planer with a rear mounted drum, allowing you to start the cut directly in front of curbs, fences, walls or other obstructions.  It's perfect for commercial work and completion of projects where a compact machine design is an advantage, such as shoulders and other narrow milling projects.  The RX-400 features milling widths of 26", 36" and 48" (66, 90, 120cm) and a maximum cut depth of 12.5" (320mm).  A conveyer swing of 60 degrees to either side adds to the RX-400's versatility. The original sealing of the cutter housing, adapted to the shape of the cutting drum, minimizes the accumulation of the milled material.
The RX-400 is a medium planer with no option for cold recycling which available for larger models - RX-500/700/900 with milling widths 2000 mm and more. They can offer contractors more versatility and productivity than wheeled stabilizer-recyclers. The Roadtec planers are fitted with drums from 3 world leaders – Sollami, Kennametal and Keystone. The new Terex PR165 utility mill features 12-inch-wide by 36-inch-diameter tires, which reduce ground contact pressure and increases traction. To protect its hydrostatic rotor drive from accidental damage, the PR165 includes a built-in relief system. The machine has a 12-inch cutting depth, a “center-mount” design to boost cutting performance, and four-wheel steering with four steering modes: coordinated front and rear, crab, front only and rear only.

Terex corporation has presented its new road planers in the Russian market. They are designated mainly for preparation works before road renovation such as with a hot mix overlay before surface treatment, including, milling with cementitious and sealing additives, surface micro treatment, road marking removal. They perform a wide range of pavement cutting, removal and recycling operations on cement and asphaltic concrete pavements. The size and maneuverability of PR165, PR220 make them ideal for smaller jobs, such as intersections, cul-de-sacs, wedge and header cuts, bump and joint removal.
The original double parallelogram rear suspension enhances full contact with the ground and its wider wheels reduce ground contact pressure and increase traction. Constructive improvement allows a minimum cutting width 200 mm. The rotary cutter mandrel is fitted with a high speed hydro drive through a planetary reducer gearbox inside the cutter drum.  The planer has a front double section conveyer for loading trucks with milled material. The PR330, PR600, PR950 (5) large planers (max. cutting width over 1,ooo mm) are crawler mounted pavement millers. The PR330 is also available in a wheeled configuration, and the PR600 è PR950 on three supports enhancing maneuverability and easy handling. Wheeled planers are easier to transport and their higher speed allows them to move when potholing. Crawler mounted planers are good for major pavement works on wide roads, slopes, unstable soils. The Terex crawlers increase ground contact, they are 452 mm wide for three- and 350 mm for and four-track models, 2337 and 2074 mm long accordingly.
The original control system gives a minimal cut turning radius 2438 mm, the best in the industry, preventing crawlers from transcending the edges. The Kennametal tungsten carbide teeth make edges smooth, its hydraulic tank with 17 bar pressure effectively cleans cutters with 10 individual spray nozzles. It has a cooling unit. Closed circuit infinitely variable displacement pumps with reverse drive for two-step conveyors allow quick cleaning of the cutting chamber. The cutter drum can be replaced for a larger one. All major components are modular, designed for easy removal and replacement. Lubrication points are accessible on the mainframe for quick maintenance. The planers give more working hours and lower operating costs.

Bomag showcased a new series of cold planers based on 3 platforms – 30, 50 and 60 in the Russian market in 2007. The basic features of each platform are milling width, engine capacity, dimensions and lists of optional and standard components. So, platform 30 is represented by 3 models - 1000, 1200 and 1300 mm and powered by a turbo diesel water-cooled engine Caterpillar 205 kilowatt/279 hp.
Another innovative feature is a water reserve larger than its predecessor. The water is held in two tanks, one with a capacity of 1,000 litres, located at the rear. The machine works for longer without needing to re-tank, and is also better ballasted. The BM 1300/30 (6) modelis designed to impress with its excellent milling performance, maneuverability, compact size, low cost. It's perfect for commercial work and completion of projects where a compact machine design is an advantage, such as narrow milling projects, and for larger parts on motorways.  The basis configuration of these planers is fitted with necessary facilities for effective operation, to boost convenience they can be optionally provided with a hydraulic drive. They are fitted as standard with a hydraulic, fully automatic folding conveyor belt and driver cab. The contractor no longer has to provide specialist transport when the planer needs moving.  They also have an additional pump to get water use from natural water supplies, an electric diesel fuel pump. The control system of cut depth and leveling can be optionally fitted with 3D class sensors which allow application of geodesic project digital models.

Platform 50 is launched in two models with working widths 1500 and 2000 mm, fitted with the Deutz 8-cylinder turbo diesel engine 350 kW / 476 hp. The water is held in two tanks, one with a capacity of 1,000 litres, located at the rear. The machine works for longer without needing to re-tank, and is also better ballasted. BM 2000/50 provides high performance at low operational cost. Its dimensions and weight (29.6 t) are sufficient for high output, large areas can be quickly removed. BM 1500/50 is also worth mentioning. It features a 2.6 kW output that is designed for milling supersolid coverings. It also has a bigger water tank (2700 l) and fuel tank (800 l). It is water cooled, diesel engined, it has an integral cleaning system with a hose reel, pump and water tank. They are fitted as standard with a hydraulic, fully automatic folding conveyor belt and driver cab canopy.
This is a range that not only offers the ultimate in easy operation and top-level ergonomics but also legendary BOMAG maintenance quality.
The Bomag 60 platform presents one model with 200 mm (7) working milling width. It features a 8 cylinder 440 kW Deutz that boosts milling capacity (2.62 kW) and reach maximum output irrespective of the milled surface compactness. All models have a centered drum arrangement and a transverse arrangement of the power unit. A poly-V-belt with a reliable hydraulic belt idler coordinates the direct drum drive with little power loss. An electric safety clutch helps avert damage in the drum from foreign objects and hatches. An easy to handle and reliable transmission minimizes service costs. Milling quality is also reached due to the hydraulic actuators of the conveyor front plate and rear plate with its blocking. It can be used before recycling. Using quick-detachable hardmetal elements on the rear plate edge and side plates of the milling chamber makes them durable. The milling drum chamber is designed to make it possible to plane asphalt close to the curb if necessary. The operating element is simple and reliable.
The driver's seat and platform can be shifted laterally and safety is enhanced with clear all round visibility. The machine has functional monitoring. Maintenance is kept to a minimum with a central greasing system. A milling drum can be easily dismantled and the miller’s basic systems can be left intact.
The planers are equipped with a flexible quick-change system for Kennametal drums. Cutters and spray nozzles can be replaced safely due to a compressor for pneumatic tool connection. This procedure has to be performed daily at intensive work.
Hydraulic and electric component cells are arranged to provide maximum convenience for maintenance and monitoring. The main control panels are on both sides of the miller and all command keys and toggle switches are easily replaced.
It has a lockable, vandal-proof and sound-insulated engine hood, for the driver’s convenient lifting large millers are fitted with hydraulic supports.
This new standard of operator comfort and convenience extends also to the ground station with the largest lockable storage space (for removable headlights, control consoles, leveling systems, rear-view mirrors) in its class and new, lighter doors. The compartment is easy to access from the ground but also provides theft-proof storage for cutters, tools and protective clothing. The operator needs only one single central key for the entire machine. Primary consoles have a powerful quickly mounted metal protection.
The work of BOMAG engineers has culminated in the vibration-insulated operator's platform. Instead of using a uniformly welded frame for the new series design, the operator's station is separated from the machine and mounted the platform itself on vibration dampers, thus eliminating harmful vibrations. The new exhaust control reduces noise emissions and also adds to the comfort of the operator.
Wirtgen offers the latest generation road planers putting stress on further development of milling equipment with standard working width from 1 to 1,3 m, front loading of material. The innovative machines W 100, W 100 F, W 120 F and W 130 F made their debut at Bauma’2007 exhibition in 2007. The W100F model was nominated for Bauma Innovation Award by the German construction industry in the “New design” category. The new road planer is to replace the famous W1000F model of cold planers. They are fitted with reliable Wirtgen tool holders. This patented system allows quick cutter replacement on the cutter drum. So, one planer can perform a number of milling works. It is possible to vary the working width from 300 mm to 1,ooo mm with FCS cutter drums. This is a range that only offers the ultimate in easy operation and top-level ergonomics.
3D Control system is based on 3 main principles: a prism installed on the planer, follow-up system, radio signal connecting them, and a computer-driven control system on the cutter. It is especially efficient in profiling new covering at airports and proving grounds. This technique can be applied in pin-point precision profiles of all complexities on highways.
The W 150 (8) is a large but compact milling machine, letting the W 150 be used for a variety of different applications such as milling large surfaces, removing pavement layers at full depth, or leveling. It has an up-to-date power system, highly productive conveyor, easy handling and large water and fuel tanks. The machine works for longer without needing to re-tank. The W 150 can optionally be equipped with the new Wirtgen LEVEL PRO levelling system to controloperating parameters on both sides and regulate the milling depth and inclination.
The W 150 is equipped with the world’s first 4-fold full-floating and height adjustment system as a standard machine feature. The system ensures that the machine aligns parallel to the road pavement automatically both during the milling operation and in transport mode. It also guarantees reliable traction of the W 150’s four crawler track units, enabling the machine to always adapt to ground conditions dynamically, and ensuring permanent ground contact and precise adherence to the selected working depth during the milling operation.
The innovative WIDRIVE machine control system is a successful new development . WIDRIVE links and centrally controls all major machine functions – diesel engine, travel drive, milling drum drive, conveyor drive, water system, 4-fold full floating height adjustment system. Generally, manual operator interventions that were previously necessary to control the machine and coordinate the individual work steps during milling are now no longer required.
The WIDRIVE system registers independently that an adjustment of, for instance, the rear track units is necessary to align the machine parallel to the road surface. This feature makes operation of the machine even more convenient.
Switching off the conveyor drive automatically during reverse travel of the milling machine in transport mode is an exceptionally useful feature in particular when moving from one milled cut to the next. The operator reverses the machine, and the conveyor drive is stopped immediately. WIDRIVE governs this function fully automatically by side shields which can be lifted. In that way, the cold milling machine will not spill any milled material that would need to be removed from the milled cut later. The hydrodriven back panel is gives access to the drum for convenient cutters replacement.

An efficient work of foreign engineering and marketing has resulted in a great number of cold planers flooding Russian highways and motor roads. They also gave us a glimmer of hope to restore old and build new domestic road building plants. Russian produce starts competing with foreign brands at a rather high level. Strange as it may seem, we owe these improvements to the foreign companies themselves. They did not only bring their vehicles to the Russian market but also introduced aftersale service, promoting Russian manufacturers to set up service centers of their own. Moreover, they launched equipment assembly in Russia (like Wirtgen) and laid the technological foundation of domestic manufacturing.

EXPERT OPINION
Shestopalov K.K., candidate of engineering sciences, full professor at Moscow motor road institute (State Technical University).
Cold asphalt planers have gain great popularity in Russian cities for the last 10-15 years. Their appearance is a result of a rapid growth of paved roads (which is by all means a blessing for Russia) and rapid wear and tear of asphalt pavement due to intensive traffic (which is a problem rather than a blessing). In these conditions pavement repair in old time-consuming methods can no longer be applied. A compressor, paving breaker, two spades and a dumper application used to take hours and they are unprofitable today. There is demand in equipment capable of removing the worn coating on big areas in several hours and paving them with new modern productive machines. The technology of milling preheated asphalt pavement proved to be very inconvenient and labour-intensive. First, it required rigid temperature range heaters to prevent bitumen burning and second, strictly synchronized work of heaters and planers, and last, it did not allow down time as it led to material cooling and sticking to cutting tools and other problems. Though this technology still exists and is developing, it has essential advantages – low solidity of heated asphalt, durability of cutters, etc.
The shortcomings of hot planing inspired the idea of cold planing. Road planers have been logically developed to meet new requirements, they were used to build improved pavement by mixing soil with binding material on the roadway. The new class of vehicles is created on an advanced technological level with state-of-the-art solutions, but, to our regret, outside Russia.
