Engineering Specialists Discussed Membership in WTO
On February 11, 2010 in Moscow a round table was held dedicated to the issue “Russia’a Joining the WTO – Problems and Prospects”. The discussion of this issue was initiated by the members of the Committee for Tractor, Agricultural, Lumbering, Public and Road Building Engineering of the Central Council Bureau of the Russian Engineering Union, LLC (hereinafter – the Committee). The co-initiator of the event was the Department of Trade Negotiations of the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation. More than 80 specialists attended the round table - members of the Committee, representatives of the related departments of the Ministry of Economic Development and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, related scientific research and technical educational institutions, trade union organizations and associations, enterprises from various sectors of the engineering complex, as well as the industry leading experts.
The participants discussed potential advantages and disadvantages of Russian membership in the WTO, changes in the forms of governemental industry support, customs tariff regulation of the import of foreign engineering products into the Russian Federation if Russia joins the WTO. Specialists of the related ministries answered numerous questions of the representatives of the Russian engineering complex. Machinery manufacturers express their concern over retaining of their positions in case strong western players enter the market after joining the WTO.
Summarizing the results of the event, most of the participants of the round table confirmed that they were ready to cooperate actively with the governmental authorities in solving the challenges faced by Russia with respect to joining the WTO, and offered to commence developing specific measures through holding regular consultations between the representatives of the competent governmental authorities and engineering community.
